大勢が夢見る海外留学。
しかしいざネットで情報を調べだすと必要な資料が多いと気づく。
GPA, トーフル、GRE, ボランティア経験等など。
しかし私自身、成績関連のものより苦労したのが推薦状です。
アメリカでは、多くの大学や大学院が推薦状を出してくださいと要求してきます。
しかしこの推薦状、一体誰に何を書いてもらうのがベストで、
実際にどれだけオファーに影響してくるのでしょうか？
基本的には自分の事をよく知る教授に書いてもらう
文系だとゼミ、理系だと研究室に所属している場合が多いので、
まずは身近な先生に頼んでみるのが一番です。
しかし多くのアメリカ大学は、推薦状は最低三つ出してくださいと言います。
研究室の教授じゃ足りない場合、誰に頼めばいいのでしょうか？
自分が高得点を取った授業の先生
特に、積極的に授業の後に討論を行ったり、質問をしに行った事のある教授が望ましいです。
自分の研究室の教授以外、多くの学生は他の先生とあまり接点を持っていません。
いきなり教授に推薦所を書いてと言ってもむこうも困るでしょう。
しかし授業の点数が高かったり、学習意欲が高い生徒と言うのは、意外と記憶に残るものです。
更にアメリカの大学は、特に自ら行動を起こして知識を求める学生が大好きです。
そういった内容の推薦状は大きなプラスとなるでしょう。
逆に言えば、推薦状を書いてもらう為あえて教授と授業後に討論をする、質問をしに行く等の準備をするのもいいと思います。
どれほど重要なのか？
あくまでも個人的な意見なので、参考にはしないで下さい！
周りの経験者の皆さんと話しあったところ、結論から言うと
推薦状の質は実際にオファーを頂くに大したプラスにはならなかったと思います。
もちろん、世界的な学会で発表をし、賞を取ったことがある、実際にその学校と友好関係を持った教授や、
卒業生の方々に執筆して頂いたのであれば、話は別です。
物凄く役に立ちます！
ただ、そのような背景がなく、ごく一般学校のごく一般生徒が、有名な教授に無理して書いてもらったからと言って、
オファーが貰える確率が劇的に上がると言う事は、少なくとも私の周りではなかったです。
一般の学生にはやはり、肝になるGPAや語学の成績を頑張った方が何倍も有意義だと私は思います。
ただ、あくまで私が留学に行った2016年度の、私の周りの話だと言うことはご理解ください。
推薦状サンプル
推薦状は、基本的に教員に書いてもらうものですが、
中には書き方がわからない教授等もおります。
私の場合、台湾に留学しに行った時に推薦状を頼んだのですが、
教授に、まずは自分で執筆して、そのあと私が直して出そうと言われたのです。
流石に教授に書いてもらった物を載せたくないので
その時自分で執筆した物をサンプルとして置いておきます。
基本的には自分で執筆した物ですが、きちんと教授に直してもらったものですし、
私自身これを提出しており、世界ランクトップ50の複数大学からオファーを頂いたので、
これのせいで不合格になる事はないと思います（と信じている）
留学を考えている方、学生に推薦状を書こうとしている教員方、どうぞご参考ください。

Dear Admissions Committee,
Mr.** is one of the best students in our summer exchange program. He possesses comprehensive capabilities and excellent characteristics. I strongly recommend him.
I have known ** since April 2015. At that time, he was a student majoring in ** and his knowledge about programming was limited. He applied for my laboratory summer program and we had several e-mail correspondences in order to know each other better. Though he had hardly any experience with image processing, I gladly found that he had a strong thirst for knowledge. He wanted to come to my lab because it was his own initiative to train his programming skill for his master research. I asked him to learn data structure, algorithm, and digital image processing by himself before he came to my lab. Thus, he can complete one ACM ICPC Online Judge program/day.
My laboratory researches were about image processing, and I asked ** to pass the digital camera contest, which is the entrance examination for my laboratory. I instructed him basic knowledge for image pipeline and gave him a month for preparing the contest. For making progress, unlike most students in this program before, he spent a great amount of effort and time on reading advanced articles and references. Image processing was a completely fresh area for him, and it was difficult to master systematically in a short time even for a student majoring in computer science. But ** displayed his strong scientific enthusiasm and dedication to it since the very beginning, and actively put forward his own opinion at his auto white balance code. Finally, he passed the digital camera contest with an excellent score. His capacity in literature‐review, solid foundation in math analysis impressed me greatly.
It is abundantly clear that ** is a highly motivated student. Even more, ** possess excellent communication skills, both in written an orally. He speaks excellent English, which is indispensable for his future research and career. As a result, he gets along well with students with various backgrounds in my lab. I am sure that what he did in this summer will bring significant influence on his future research since he got excellent programming skill this summer compared with other students majoring in **.
In summary, ** has brilliant records on both programming and research. He is creative and can often come up with novel and original ideas. He is also capable of implementing a prototype system to prove his original contribution. He is aggressive, persevering, and enthusiastic for pursuing his objective. Furthermore, he possesses excellent characteristics such as communication skills, leadership, and an open mind. I strongly recommend him without reservation.
